You've found the perfect bracelet for your son, husband or grandson. There's just one problem: you want it to be a surprise, and you have no idea what size his wrist is. Don't worry — here are four easy ways to find out, and a simple chart to choose the right size.
Method 1: Measure with a string or a strip of paper
If you can measure his wrist directly, this is the most accurate way.
- Wrap a piece of string, a phone charger cable or a strip of paper around his wrist, just below the wrist bone.
- Mark where the end overlaps.
- Lay it flat against a ruler or a tape measure and read the length.
- Add about 0.8 inch (2 cm) for a comfortable fit. That's the bracelet length you need.
Method 2: Use a watch or bracelet he already owns
This is the best trick for a surprise. Borrow a watch or bracelet he wears comfortably, lay it flat, and measure it from end to end (clasp included). That number is already his comfortable bracelet length — no need to add anything.
Method 3: Ask someone who knows
His wife, partner or a sibling may know, or may be able to measure him with a casual excuse ("I'm checking something for a gift for Dad").
Method 4: Estimate from his build
If you really can't measure, his build is a reasonable guide:
- Slim build or a teenager: wrist around 6–6.5 inches.
- Average build: wrist around 7–7.5 inches. This covers most adult men.
- Large or very muscular build: wrist around 8 inches or more.
